VRChat fonts are Unicode text styles, such as ɴᴏᴠᴀ or ꧁༺ Nova ༻꧂, that you paste into your VRChat display name, the name shown above your avatar in every world. VRChat display names must be 4 to 15 characters long, and the counter above checks each style against the 15-character maximum.
VRChat display name rules
VRChat's help page sets 4 rules for display names:

The 90-day lock is 13 times longer than Roblox's 7-day display-name wait and 6 times longer than Epic's 2-week wait. A styled name that shows as boxes stays on your avatar for 3 months, so a styled name needs a check before you save it. VRChat does not publish which Unicode characters a display name may contain.
Which VRChat fonts fit 4–15 characters?
Every style in the tool keeps 1 character per letter, so a short name leaves room for frames. Frames cost characters: ꧁༺ ༻꧂ adds 6 characters including spaces. Bold, cursive and monospace letters count as 1 character but take 2 UTF-16 units each, which matters only if VRChat counts UTF-16 units, and VRChat does not say which unit it counts:

A 4-letter name fits every style, including ₊˚⊹♡ ɴᴏᴠᴀ ♡⊹˚₊ at 14 characters. A 9-letter name such as "Starlight" in the royal frame reaches 15. For long names, use small caps or wide letters without a frame.
VRChat fonts that work on your nameplate
A VRChat font works on your nameplate only if the font VRChat uses to draw nameplates contains every character. VRChat draws nameplates inside the 3D world, with fonts the client packages, so a character that your browser or keyboard shows can still appear as a box above your avatar. The characters with the widest font coverage are in the Basic Multilingual Plane: small caps (ᴀ U+1D00), wide letters (Ａ U+FF21) and common symbols such as ★ (U+2605). How to change your VRChat display name safely
Because a VRChat rename locks the name for 90 days, check a styled name in 4 steps:
- Build the name above and confirm it is 4 to 15 characters.
- Prefer a style with 0 characters outside the BMP in the table.
- Paste the name into a VRChat text field that draws in-world, such as the chatbox, and check for boxes.
- Enter the final name in the display-name field and save it.

Can I change my VRChat username?
No. The VRChat username is fixed and is used for logging in, together with your email address. Only the display name, which other players see above your avatar, can change.
