Underline text generator adds a line under every character, as in u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲d̲, by attaching a Unicode combining mark to each letter. The underline is part of the text itself, so it survives pasting into Instagram, TikTok, X and other apps that offer no underline formatting.
Which characters create underlined text?
Underlined text is created by 4 combining marks from the Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F):

Each mark attaches to the character before it. The low line (U+0332) is designed to join with its neighbours into one continuous line, while the dotted and arrow marks stay separate per letter. Spaces get no mark, so the underline breaks between words.
Does underlined text show as a continuous line?
Underlined text shows as a continuous line only when the font draws U+0332 as wide as each letter. Fonts that draw the mark narrower than wide letters such as m and w leave small gaps between segments. Letters with descenders (g, j, p, q, y) overlap the line in every font. For a mark that stays readable on descenders, the double underline sits lower and the dotted underline leaves the tails visible.
Which apps support underline natively?
Discord is the only major chat app with documented underline markdown (__text__, per the Discord Help Center).
WhatsApp's 8 official formatting codes cover bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace, inline code, lists and quotes, but not
underline. Instagram bios and captions have no formatting controls, which makes Unicode underlining the only option there. The strikethrough text

How many characters does underlined text use?
Underlined text uses 2 characters per underlined character: the letter and the combining mark. "Underline" is 9 characters; U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲ is 18. A 32-character Discord display name fits 16 underlined letters. The social media character limits page lists the limit for every bio and name field.

How do I underline text on Instagram?
Instagram has no underline formatting. Generate underlined text above, copy it and paste it into the bio, caption or comment. The underline is a combining character attached to each letter, so Instagram keeps it.
Why does the underline cut through letters like g and y?
The combining low line (U+0332) is drawn at a fixed depth under the baseline. Letters with descenders, such as g, j, p, q and y, reach that depth, so the line overlaps their tails.
How do I underline text in Discord?
