Russian font generator spells English words with Cyrillic letters that resemble Latin ones, so "Russian" becomes Яцѕѕїаи. The same tool produces 2 more look-alike styles: faux Greek (gяєєк) and Japanese-look (フムアム刀).

What is faux Cyrillic?

Faux Cyrillic is English text written with Cyrillic letters chosen because they look like Latin letters, ignoring how they sound. Designers call the same effect "faux Russian" when it appears in film posters and logos, such as a backwards R written as Я. The generator uses 3 kinds of replacement:

  • Shape matches that read differently in Russian: R → Я ("ya"), N → И ("i"), W → Щ ("shch"), X → Ж ("zh"), O → Ф ("f").
  • Letters identical to Latin: lowercase а, с, о, р, х and у look the same as a, c, o, p, x and y but are different code points.
  • Borrowed look-alikes from other scripts: ↁ (Roman numeral, for D), Ꮮ (Cherokee, for L) and the small capitals ɢ and ʟ.

What do faux Cyrillic letters really say?

Faux Cyrillic letters say something different from what they show. This table lists 8 common substitutions with their real Russian sound:

Used forCharacterReal letter nameRussian sound
RЯCyrillic capital letter ya (U+042F)"ya"
NИCyrillic capital letter i (U+0418)"ee"
AДCyrillic capital letter de (U+0414)"d"
BБCyrillic capital letter be (U+0411)"b"
OФCyrillic capital letter ef (U+0424)"f"
WЩCyrillic capital letter shcha (U+0429)"shch"
XЖCyrillic capital letter zhe (U+0416)"zh"
YЧCyrillic capital letter che (U+0427)"ch"

Screen readers follow the real letter, not the look. A screen reader set to English announces "Яцѕѕїаи" as a string of Cyrillic letter names or tries to pronounce it as Russian. The fancy text accessibility guide covers this for every style.

Faux Greek and Japanese-look text

Faux Greek and Japanese-look text use the same shape-matching idea with different scripts. Both styles convert lowercase and capital letters to the same character, so case is lost.

Style"Hello World"Characters from
Faux Greekнєℓℓσ ωσяℓ∂Greek (α σ ρ υ ω χ), Cyrillic (в н к я т), Hebrew (נ) and symbols (¢ ∂ ƒ ℓ)
Japanese lookん乇レレの Wの尺レりHalfwidth Katakana (ム キ ノ レ), Hiragana (り の ん ひ), full-width Katakana (ム ズ), Hangul (ᄃ) and CJK ideographs (乃 乇 刀 尺 丂 乙)

Japanese-look text reads as unrelated syllables and kanji to Japanese readers: 刀 means "sword" and 尺 is a unit of length. Faux Greek has no real Greek letter for g, q or z, so those 3 letters stay Latin.

Are look-alike letters allowed in names?

Look-alike letters are allowed in display names and bios for decoration, but platforms treat them as impersonation when they imitate another account, brand or web address. Mixing scripts that look identical, such as Cyrillic "а" in place of Latin "a", is the same technique used in homoglyph phishing domains, and many sites block mixed-script names for that reason. The guide are fancy fonts allowed explains each platform's rules.

Related text styles

Faux Cyrillic changes letters by script. Other converters change them by shape or symbol: the Wingdings translator swaps letters for pictures, and the gothic text generator gives the blackletter look of old European print. Russian font questions

Can Russian speakers read faux Cyrillic text?

Russian speakers read faux Cyrillic as mostly nonsense. The letters are chosen for shape, not sound: Я is pronounced "ya", И is "i" and Ж is "zh", so "Яцѕѕїаи" does not spell "Russian" to a Russian reader.

Is faux Cyrillic a real Russian font?

No. Faux Cyrillic is ordinary English spelled with real characters from the Cyrillic Unicode block (U+0400–U+04FF) plus a few look-alikes from other scripts. A real Russian font is a font file that draws Russian text; this generator does not change fonts.

Why does my faux Cyrillic username get rejected?

Username fields on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and X accept only Latin letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks, so every Cyrillic, Greek or Japanese character is rejected. Display names and bios accept them.
